EVENT DESCRIPTION

Event Type:  Seminar (This is an NIH Science event)

Title:  Dr. Eric Betzig - Graduate Student Research Symposium Keynote

Description:  We are honored to host Dr. Eric Betzig as the keynote speaker for the 14th Annual NIH Graduate Student Research Symposium. Dr. Betzig is well known for his groundbreaking work in super-resolution microscopy. While earning his PhD at Cornell, he was involved in the development of near-field optics, the first method to break the diffraction barrier in light microscopy. In 1993, he was the first to image single fluorescent molecules under ambient conditions, determining their positions to better than 1/40 of the wavelength of light. Dr. Betzig was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2014 for the development of photoactivated localization microscopy (PALM). He now heads a lab at Janelia Farms, where his group continues to develop novel optical imaging tools in an effort to open new windows into molecular, celluar, and neurobiology. The keynote will be held in the Ruth L. Kirchstein Main Auditorium at Natcher at 10:00 AM.
