Event Type:  Symposium (This is an NIH Science event)
Title:  14th Annual Graduate Student Research Symposium
Description:  Every year, the NIH Graduate Student Research Symposium exhibits the excellence of scientific research completed by the graduate students at the National Institutes of Health. Over 100 students will present posters (12:00-2:00 PM), representing the various Institutes & Centers across the NIH. Further, four students will give oral presentations (2:15-3:45 PM), which will reflect both the diversity and the depth of scientific work done by the graduate students at the NIH. Students will also participate in an elevator pitch competition (9:00-10:00 AM), in which they will present their research in two minutes or less without slides or other visual aids.

This year, we are honored to host Dr. Eric Betzig as our keynote speaker. Dr. Betzig is well known for his groundbreaking work in super-resolution microscopy. While earning his PhD at Cornell, he was involved in the development of near-field optics, the first method to break the diffraction barrier in light microscopy. In 1993, he was the first to image single fluorescent molecules under ambient conditions. Dr. Betzig was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2014 for the development of photoactivated localization microscopy (PALM). He now heads a lab at Janelia Farms, where his group continues to develop novel optical imaging tools in an effort to open new windows into molecular, celluar, and neurobiology. The keynote will be held in the Ruth L. Kirchstein Main Auditorium at Natcher at 10:00 AM.

We will also present awards to outstanding mentors who were nominated by their students in recognition of the guidance and unconditional support they have provided to their graduate students. Finally, we will end our event with a ceremony to recognize those students who have graduated from their respective partner universities in the past year and wish them continued success.

We are pleased to invite the community to attend and support students during this full day of events.
