Title:  Philosophical and Empirical-neuroscience Methodology for Determining the Nature and Existence of Consciousness and the Soul.
 
Description:  Abstract: First, the fundamental issues that constitute philosophy of mind will be clarified. Second, a definition of consciousness, and examples of the five central states of consciousness will be provided; and the progress of neuroscience and the strength of the evidence in elucidating these phenomena will be reviewed. Third, the nature of consciousness (the “soul” in colloquial parlance) and its bearer will be expounded with supporting evidence.

The Foundation for Advanced Education in the Sciences (FAES) will host an opportunity to meet Dr. Moreland in the FAES Bookstore to further discuss his work immediately following the presentation. The FAES Bookstore is located in Building 10 on the same concourse as Masur Auditorium. Grateful acknowledgement is made to the FAES Bookstore for these arrangements.

J. P. Moreland is Distinguished Professor of philosophy at Talbot School of Theology, Biola University (La Mirada, California). He received a B. S. in physical chemistry from the University of Missouri, a Th.M. in theology from Dallas Theological Seminary, an M.A. in philosophy from the University of California at Riverside, and a Ph.D. in philosophy at the University of Southern California. He has authored, edited, or contributed papers to ninety-five books, including Does God Exist? (Prometheus), The Creation Hypothesis (Intervarsity Press), Universals (McGill-Queen’s), Consciousness and the Existence of God (Routledge), and The Blackwell Companion to Natural Theology. He has also published ca. 90 articles in journals such as Philosophy and Phenomenological Research, American Philosophical Quarterly, and MetaPhilosophy. Dr. Moreland was selected in 2016 by The Best Schools as one of the 50 most influential living academician philosophers.
