EVENT DESCRIPTION

Event Type:  Grand Rounds (This is an NIH Science event)

Title:  Type I Interferon in SL

Description:  Mary K. (Peggy) Crow, M.D. received her M.D. from Cornell University Medical College in 1978, Internal Medicine and Rheumatology subspecialty training at New York Hospital and Hospital for Special Surgery, and post-doctoral research training in immunology at Rockefeller University. Dr. Crow is Physician-in-Chief and Chair of the Department of Medicine at Hospital for Special Surgery, Professor of Medicine and Chief of the Rheumatology Division at Weill Cornell Medical College, and Professor of Immunology in its Graduate School of Medical Sciences. She is the Joseph P. Routh Professor of Rheumatic Diseases in Medicine at the medical college. Dr. Crow is also Senior Scientist and Director of the Autoimmunity and Inflammation Program in the Research Division of Hospital for Special Surgery where she holds the Benjamin M. Rosen Chair in Immunology and Inflammation Research. Dr. Crow’s research is focused on the induction and regulation of human autoimmune diseases, with a particular interest in systemic lupus erythematosus, the prototypic autoimmune disease that particularly impacts young women. She has been a leader in the identification of therapeutic targets in autoimmune disease and discovered the central role of type I interferon, an immune system mediator important in the response to viruses, in the pathogenesis of systemic lupus erythematosus. Dr. Crow was President of the American College of Rheumatology from 2005-2006 and in 2017 was named an honorary member of the European League Against Rheumatism. She is also a past president of the Henry Kunkel Society, an organization of scientists dedicated to human studies of immune-mediated diseases, and is currently Co-Chair of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Lupus Research Alliance
