Event Type:  Lecture (This is an NIH Science event)
Title:  Dysfunction of mRNA Translation and Neurodegeneration
Description:  Neurodegenerative disorders affect many people, particularly in the aging population. Yet the cause of these disorders is unknown for the majority of the most prevalent forms of these diseases. Dr. Ackerman’s laboratory focuses on identifying the mechanisms underlying neuronal homeostasis in the aging mammalian brain. Using a phenotype-driven approach, her lab has identified several novel molecular mechanisms that underlie neuron death. Recently, they have extended this unbiased approach to identify genes that modify the expressivity of the phenotype caused by primary mutation. For her lecture, Dr. Ackerman will present recent data on the identification and function of a modifier gene that alters neuron death in a model with disrupted mRNA translational fidelity and describe how these findings provide a novel mechanism of quality control during protein synthesis.
