Title:  The Hedonic and Hungry Brain: Hormonal and Surgical Modulation of Human Eating and Addictive Behaviors
Description:  About the speaker: Tony Goldstone, MD, MA, MRCP, PhD, FTOS is the Head of the PsychoNeuroEndocrinology Research Group at Imperial College London, based in the Neuropsychopharmacology Unit, Centre for Psychiatry, and Computational, Cognitive and Clinical Neuroimaging Laboratory at Hammersmith Hospital, London, UK. He also serves as Consultant Endocrinologist at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, London, UK. He attended medical school at Cambridge and Oxford Universities in the UK, and trained in general medicine, adult endocrinology and diabetes at the Hammersmith, St. Bartholomew’s and Royal London Hospitals in London. He obtained his Ph.D. from Imperial College London on the hypothalamic control of feeding and metabolism. He has researched and published widely on hormonal, nutritional, obesity, surgical and genetic influences on appetite, eating and addictive behaviors, through pre-clinical, clinical, post-mortem, multi-modal phenotyping and interventional studies including MR fat and neuroimaging. He particularly uses functional MRI to investigate food reward and addictive behaviors in obesity, and through a recent 4 year MRC Experimental Medicine Challenge Grant the potential use of gut hormones to prevent relapse in smoking and alcohol use disorder. His clinical and research work also includes specialist clinics for genetic obesity including Prader-Willi syndrome, and pituitary dysfunction after traumatic brain injury, including work for the military in treating soldiers after blast injury. His public engagement work includes talks such as ‘Guts or Brain? Where hormones regulate appetite’, Food, Glorious Food! British Neuroscience Association Christmas Symposium 2011 at The Royal Society, London; ‘Obesity: what lies in weight?’, Edinburgh Science Festival 2013; ‘Separating the Fat from the Fiction: Food choices’, Edinburgh Science Festival 2014; ‘Understanding and controlling food cravings’, Science Museum Lates 2015.
