Title:

To Drink or Not(ch) to Drink: Neuromolecular Mechanisms Underlying Alcohol Seeking
Description:
Drosophila melanogaster is an effective model to study the lasting memories for alcohol intoxication that can influence cravings and alcohol seeking. Using a combination of behavior, genetics, molecular biology and biochemistry, we showed that alcohol induces immediate changes in Notch signaling in reward circuits, and this influences expression of Notch target genes required memory for the intoxication experience. This work reveals a highly conserved mechanism that clarifies how alcohol cravings may differ from other forms of appetitive memories.
