Systemic scleroderma affects an estimated 49,000 people in the United States, with many more experiencing other forms of the disease. In addition to the skin tightening and thickening characteristic of the disease, scleroderma can damage the intestines, lungs, heart and kidneys. Research efforts are focusing on the immune system, genetics, the process of fibrosis, and finding targets for new treatments.
