EVENT DESCRIPTION

Event Type:  Seminar (This is an NIH Science event)

Title:  Campylobacter Capsules: Virulence and Vaccines

Description:  Although Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli are among the most frequently isolated causative agents of bacterial diarrhea worldwide, very little is understood about the pathogenesis of these organisms, particularly at the molecular level. This research program utilizes techniques of molecular cloning, bacterial genetics, in vitro assays of virulence, and in vivo models of disease to understand the pathogenesis of campylobacters. An understanding of these mechanisms (especially the bacterial surface structures and their interaction with the host) will allow us to develop effective vaccines against diarrheal disease.
