EVENT DESCRIPTION

Event Type:  Seminar (This is an NIH Science event)

Title:  Pyroptosis: From Innate Immunity to Cancer

Description:  Laboratory of Parasitic Diseases presents Feng Shao, PhD, Deputy Director, National Institute of Biological Sciences, Beijing, China

Dr. Shao received his B.S. from Peking University, his M.S. from the Chinses Academy of Sciences and his Ph.D. from University of Michigan (laboratory of Jack E. Dixon). He followed with postdoctoral studies at UCSD and Harvard University (Damon Runyon Fellow) and established his laboratory at the National Institute of Biological Sciences in Beijing in 2005. His lab uses biochemical, structural, genetic and cell biological approaches to study host innate immunity. His group has been responsible for a number of the significant advances in the inflammasome field, including, in recent years, the identification of caspase-11 as the intracellular LPS receptor for noncanonical inflammasome activation, and gasdermin D as the caspase-1 substrate required for pyroptosis. Dr. Shao has also made major contributions in understanding the molecular and biochemical mechanisms of action for a number of bacterial virulence factors. Awarded an HHMI International Early Career Scientist award in 2012, he is also the recipient of numerous international awards for his research and continues to be one of the most prolific and influential researchers in the fields of bacterial pathogenesis and innate immunity.
