Title:  Repurposing of the Chromosome Segregation Machinery for Neuronal Morphogenesis
 
Description:  Microtubule cytoskeleton is essential for cell structure and function during various aspects of organismal development, ranging from cell division to morphogenesis of tissues like the nervous system. Cells employ specialized microtubule-based protein machines to facilitate the multifaceted functions of the microtubule cytoskeleton. Kinetochores are one such sophisticated multiprotein machine, assembled on the centromeric chromatin, to segregate chromosomes during mitosis. Decades of research have shown that kinetochore serves to link chromosomes with spindle microtubules to ensure accurate distribution of genome during cell division. In my talk, I will reveal that this evolutionarily ancient and essential mitotic machinery has been repurposed for post-mitotic functions specifically in neuronal morphogenesis during the development of nervous system.
