EVENT DESCRIPTION

Event Type:  Seminar (This is an NIH Science event)

Title:  Proteomic Instability of Cancer: HSF1 is a Guardian of Cancer Proteostasis

Description:  The Proteostasis (Protein Homeostasis) Scientific Interest Group (PSIG)* will present a seminar on Tuesday, May 16, 12:00-1:00 p.m., Building 35A Room 610 (ground floor) entitled " Proteomic Instability of Cancer: HSF1 is a Guardian of Cancer Proteostasis " by Chengkai Dai, Ph.D. who is a Stadtman Tenure-Track Investigator at the Mouse Cancer Genetics Program, Center for Cancer Research, NCI. The long-term goal of his laboratory is to understand the role of proteostasis in tumorigenesis, to illuminate the new phenomenon of proteomic instability of cancer, and to exploit disrupting proteostasis as an anti-cancer therapeutic strategy. His recent work has focused on elucidating the potent pro-oncogenic role of heat shock factor 1 (HSF1), the master transcriptional regulator of the proteotoxic stress response (PSR) that critically preserves cellular proteostasis under stresses. In this talk, he will discuss how HSF1 represses tumor-suppressive amyloidogenesis, supports mTORC1 and its mediated protein synthesis, and promotes lipogenesis, thereby enabling robust oncogenesis.
