Title:  Glia Modulate the Shape and Function of Neuron Receptive-endings
 
Description:  In nervous systems, glia approximate neurons in number, associate closely with them and are implicated in many neurodevelopmental disorders including childhood brain cancers and autism. However, glial functions in nervous system development and function are poorly understood at molecular resolution. Using C. elegans as a model, I identified a novel mechanism where glia regulate the shape and function of a neuron-ending by modulating its specific ionic micro-environment. All components of the underlying molecular pathway, which I identified, are broadly conserved and therapeutically relevant. Glia are also known to engulf neuronal fragments in mammals, but the molecular mechanisms regulating this process are unclear. I discovered that C. elegans glia engulf neuronal fragments as well, which establishes C. elegans as a new model for studying this evolutionarily conserved and disease-relevant function of glial cells.
