Title:  Natural Products: Drugs and Medicines for All Reasons and All Seasons

Description:  David G. I. Kingston, Ph.D. was born in London, UK, and received his B.A. degree in Natural Sciences and his Ph.D. degree in 1964, both from Cambridge University. After postdoctoral appointments at M.I.T. and Cambridge, he moved to the U.S.A., where he is currently a University Distinguished Professor in the Department of Chemistry at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech).

Dr. Kingston studies natural products for medical usefulness, with cancer and malaria as particular targets. He is the principal investigator and group leader for an ongoing biodiversity utilization and conservation project which started in Suriname in South America and is now located in Madagascar. In addition to scientific discoveries of new bioactive natural products, this project has assisted in the creation of the Central Suriname Nature Reserve and of new protected areas in Madagascar.

Dr. Kingston is the founding Director of the Virginia Tech Center for Drug Discovery, which has the aim of promoting drug discovery at Virginia Tech by fostering collaborations between chemists and biologists. He has received many honors and awards, including the Research Achievement Award of the American Society of Pharmacognosy in 1999, the Virginia Scientist of the Year Award in 2002, and the ACS Guenther Award in the Chemistry of Natural Products in 2008.
