EVENT DESCRIPTION

Event Type:  Class (This is an NIH Science event)

Title:  Data Modeling Using Natural Language Sentences

Description:  All data models have meaning, but unfortunately they sometimes mean more to the analyst and the implementer than they do to a Subject Matter Expert. The Natural Language Modeling methodology addresses this widespread problem by facilitating the communication between modelers and Subject Matter Experts. The methodology transforms data requirements into simple natural language sentences that can be easily understood and validated by a Subject Matter Expert. Data requirements can come from regulations, expert knowledge, and existing information systems and/or designs. This course will provide the tools for creating data models from the simple sentences derived from any of these sources. The course will also teach both experienced and inexperienced modelers to better communicate their understanding of model requirements to managers, subject matter experts, and end users. Using this approach, a subject matter expert is able to validate the contents of a graphical model without learning about the complexities involved with graphical modeling techniques. The subject matter expert is only required to know the existing or desired rules for their subject area. NIH data examples will be used throughout the course including illustrations from R&D Contracts, HHS reporting regulations on IT Investments and Information Systems, eRA Receipt and Referral, etc. Students are encouraged to send in advance or at least bring data problems to the course. The problems will be analyzed by the group as time permits. During this four day course, students will learn basic modeling skills that apply to all graphical modeling areas. The last day of the course will include an introduction to the NORMA modeling tool that creates Object Role Modeling (ORM) models. Students will be shown how they can download this low cost modeling tool. NIH-related class examples will be created on the tool and basic tool functions will be explained.
